Do you or your parents hold a night job? The impact of shift work on your health could be detrimental! [[MORE]] Shift work has recently been designated as a carginogen by the WHO. A carcinogen is any substance that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer. In the Western world, especially America, sleep has been devalued because time is money. Who has time to sleep when that time can be spent to make more money? Well, the societal implications for this ideology proved themselves to be costly: a whopping $70 billion dollars per year is estimated to be lost due to sleep disturbances! Remember the Exxon Valdez oil spill? That was because the first mate of the captain was sleep deprived, not because of the initial understanding that the captain was drunk. So you tell me, is the money worth the health consequences of not sleeping regular hours?

Do you feel like shit after you stayed up the whole night? Well, you kind of look like shit too. You may not look THAT bad, but you could look better. [[MORE]] In the study by Axelsson (2010), participants were photographed twice: once after a normal night of sleep (approximately 8 hours) and once after no sleep. Can you think of a time when you or a close one stayed up all night and drove the next day? Read on to find out why that’s dangerous and then tell your friends! [[MORE]] Being up for too long slowly deprives your body of wakefulness. The study by Dawson & Reid (1997) had subjects complete a PVT (psychomotor vigilance task) session every other hour. This task evaluates sustained attention by measuring how many lapses, also known as micro sleeps, that the participant takes. The results found were that the participants would begin to do worse and worse after 16 hours of being awake, and by 22 hours they performed as badly as if they were legally drunk! This 16 hours number is interesting because if you include the 8 hours of sleep you generally need, that adds up to a 24-hour day! If you are thinking about pulling an all-nighter before needing to drive to your school to take the exam, well, don’t do it. It’s not worth it!
